Finally! The bánh mì recipe is a follow up to the recipe I last posted, the Vietnamese pork belly recipe more than two years ago in restaurants in hanoi (!!). I hope the next recipe here doesn't take another two years :).

banh mi recipe - a step by step pictorial

Originally designed as on-the-go food, but compact, portable and even though I sell it well here it really is an affordable and humble creation of any sandwich enthusiast to try in restaurant hanoi.

The Vietnamese sandwich was influenced by French colonialism in Vietnam with French baguettes (similar to Vietnamese coffee), but the Vietnamese made this sandwich on their own.
What is Bánh Mì?

Vietnamese bánh mì is a departure from our simple homemade white bread sandwich, with a more unique and unique flavor than the usual American chain sand-long sandwiches. You get your crusty bread fix with delicious meat, fatty and salty spreads, crunchy pickles to balance the richness, and herbs for a clean handheld meal full of flavor restaurant hanoi.

Bánh mì is a Vietnamese sandwich. Bánh mì literally means bread, just as the Vietnamese word for rice can also refer to "food" or "food." I always wonder if the "way" of saying things or because the main ingredient, like it is bread or rice, restaurant hanoi is so important that it can't be separated from the dish or food you make here.

Buying Vietnamese Sandwiches From Local Stores
I grew up with my mom making these sandwiches at home in San Jose, and today I'm lucky to be living near a major Vietnamese community, Little Saigon, in Southern California. There are dozens of bánh mì shops nearby such as Gala Bakery and many Bánh Mì Che Cali locations. I used to eat a lot of Lee's Sandwiches and they were still a decent choice when they had fresh baguettes coming out of the oven, but you can find better quality sandwiches from smaller mom spots.

Perhaps having too much competition in Southern California keeps prices lower than the $ 5 American subs, restaurants near me for dinner which I appreciate. And if you get a lot of Vietnamese buy-2-get-1 free deals, it's cheaper to load.

What makes a good Vietnamese sandwich?
The main thing that stands out is the bread. Type and quality are important. Good bread is a base for the rest of the ingredients (which you should also choose carefully).

Some people bake this bread at home, and after frustrating nearly a dozen times with regular French baguettes, I agree to go ahead. In this recipe I used the store to buy mini Vietnamese baguettes. Don't be shy in that!

The problem with a good baguette for bánh mì is that you can't buy it anywhere but from a bakery in Vietnam. The large, dense breads baked by American supermarkets (sometimes for their garlic bread) are huge and quite dense, restaurants near me for dinner but can work in a pinch. French bread will come to you.

Avoid sourdough, anything too dense and go for a crispy crust. Vietnamese baguette is usually quite windy with a crispy crust. Some markets have small French bread crumbs that will work for them.

When you get a chance to try a bake shop specifically made for sandwiches, everything will change even if your filling ingredients remain the same.
While made-to-order sandwich shops can be tedious and convenient, making them at home can be even better when you customize them to your own taste.

And to be frank, no sandwich shop does the pickle I like - it's usually too noisy and watery. The homemade pork belly for these sandwiches can be of better quality when you control everything to your liking from beef fat, cutting thickness, seasoning and meat quantity in restaurants near me for dinner.
